Two dead after car drives into Lac St. Louis in Lachine

A 911 call was received at 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday stating that a vehicle had driven into Lac St. Louis in Lachine.

The incident occurred in Lachine near 34th Avenue and St. Joseph Boulevard. Eyewitnesses heard the vehicle drive into a park and then careen into the water.

According to reports, a witness who saw the car drive into the water dove in to try and save the driver and passenger but was unable to get close enough to the vehicle as it hurriedly plunged to the bottom.

SPVM has recovered the body of a 19 year old woman and a 22 year old man.

“We don’t know why the vehicle went into the water,” explained SPVM Constable Raphael Bergeron.

Following the tragedy, SPVM divers as well as the Canadian Coast Guard were on site to first try and reduce the two occupants. The vehicle sank seven meters into the lake and unfortunately, the operation then became a recovery mission to extract the vehicle and the bodies.

The SPVM noted that the investigation is ongoing.
