The final night at the Hockey Shrine

Forum hot dogs being served for one final night.

Noted West End documentary filmmaker and photographer Ezra Soiferman has been keeping a certain photo book project secret for 20 years. Last Game at The Forum will launch with a 5 à 7 gallery exhibit and book launch at Art Victoria Park this Friday on Victoria Avenue in Westmount. It will feature a limited edition, bilingual, 66-page coffee table book and many framed, never-before-seen documentary images of the staff, fans, structure and soul of the beloved Montreal Forum, which shut its doors as a sports and entertainment venue two decades ago and eventually came back to life as movie theatre complex, along with a few other stores and restaurants.

I was among those lucky enough to be at the final game between the Habs and the Dallas Stars. “I never knew how long I would wait to release these photos,” Soiferman shared with me. “There was such sadness about the Forum closing back in the day that I always kept saying to myself ‘Too soon.’ There was a certain grieving period I think the city needed to go through. Now that the mourning is over and fans are entrenched in the Bell Centre, and it’s such a big anniversary, I felt it was time to go for it and get these images out there. The response has been incredible. I have pre-orders coming in by e-mail and I am setting up a way for people to buy copies through my EzSez.com site.”

Soiferman gave me an advance look at the book and it is indeed quite impressive. The show continues until March 25. There will be 24 images up on the walls, plus a number of other photos of Soiferman’s from other photo series. The book contains 60 images in colour and black and white and features a beautifully written forward by former Canadiens President, Ronald Corey.

STARLIGHT SKI-O-THON: I am not a big fan of winter or snow, except when it comes to events like next weekend’s 25th annual Starlight Children’s Foundation Ski-O-Thon at Ski Le Chantecler in the Laurentians. More than 1,000 supporters will hit the slopes on Saturday in an effort to raise $100,000 for seriously ill children and their families. The event will include a morning of ski/snowboarding, including adaptive skiing, followed by an outdoor BBQ for all participants. One of the event highlights is the Snow-box Derby Competition, featuring some of the most innovative and custom-made snow-box designs made by enrolled teams. Also, in attendance will be Starlight ambassadors, courageous children who with their families are there to meet and cheer on attendees, who witness first-hand the results of their efforts. All event proceeds will go to Starlight Children’s Foundation. To register and download a donation form visit starlightskiothon.ca.

COHEN CHATTER: Singer-songwriter Cheryl Nye has just released a new C.D. entitled “I Surrender To My Heart.” It is an hommage to the James Bond films with original songs written by herself. Her title track recently won an Akademia Music Award for Best Song in Pop Category for February 2016 (Beverly Hills, California). It is her second Akademia Music Award for her songs on her new album.
