The biggest event dedicated to new housing in Quebec, the Open House Weekends, will be held on April 2, 3, 9 and 10. The event’s 20th anniversary will be underlined in a very special way by putting local design in the limelight with the Quebec Furniture in the Spotlight special activity.

Four creative designers will take up the challenge of decorating four inspiring spaces with a selection of made-in-Quebec furniture.

Jean-Claude Poitras, both the creator and the instigator of this design challenge, said: “I have made it my mission 10 years ago, to promote Quebec design through ambitious, collective and unifying projects that are everything but ordinary. This is what I do as part of the Open House Weekends, in collaboration with the Quebec Furniture Manufacturers’ Association.”

Open House Weekends filled with activities

Under the theme, It’s time to buy, the 2016 Open House Weekends offer a wide range of house and condo projects to discover, and that can meet the diverse needs of all categories of buyers. Moreover, with the expected return of the Habitat Design Awards, all visitors are invited to vote for their favourite decorated model unit among those featured by builders participating in the contest.

This is a great opportunity to stock up on new ideas in interior design. Finally, in collaboration with the Centre d’expertise sur la construction commerciale en bois (Cecobois), the public is invited to discover innovative techniques for constructing 4+ storey buildings while making use of wooden structures.

“We have been working for several months on a very special edition for this spring,” says Jacques Beaulieu, founder and president of the Open House Weekends. “We are the pioneers of the open house formula for new housing in Québec. Year after year, we have been offering a pool of activities that appeal to buyers and bring visitors to new housing developments. By asserting itself as a showcase for Québec creativity, the 2016 Open House Weekends event is positioned as a true spearhead of Québec design.”

Québec furniture in the spotlight: 4 creative designers, 4 inspiring spaces

By inviting buyers to visit the four model units appointed by experienced designers, the Quebec Furniture in the Spotlight activity seeks to make all stakeholders in this sector speak with one voice and promote the products by enhancing the image of its manufacturers and designers. By setting a partnership with residential builders, they will have an exceptional springboard to achieve their goals.

At the end of the event, the majority of the exhibited furniture will be donated to the Habitat for Humanity Foundation whose mission is to mobilize volunteers and community partners in building affordable housing and promoting home ownership as a way to end the cycle of poverty.

Two innovative projects built with cross-laminated timber panels (CLT)

Another great original first: in collaboration with Cecobois and Nordic Structures, the Open House Weekends will present two multi-storey residential projects built by Sotramont with solid wood panels — i.e. cross-laminated timber panels (CLT). They are the Arbora project in Griffintown, which has eight storeys, and the Tod project in Saint-Laurent, which has six storeys. Known for their structural, energy efficiency and environmental performances, CLT panels also help to create a healthy, warm and peaceful living environment. It should be noted that the Arbora project, co-developed by LSR GesDev, will be the largest residential complex made with CLT panels in the world!

Housing for all and for all budgets

City or suburb homes, houses or new condos, classical or contemporary style, the Open House Weekends offer four categories of projects that reflect the diversity of the market: Affordable homes at less than $250,000 (plus taxes), family homes with three+ bedrooms and prestige homes regrouping condos, high-end new houses and projects for the 55+ also offering a rental component. Hence, all buyers can more easily make their dream come true according to their personal tastes and budget.

Also noteworthy is the strategic association of two key players with complementary missions in the housing sector, the Open House Weekends and the portal, which combine their resources to better serve buyers. An additional benefit which is added to the program of activities, making the Open House Weekends the best time to become a home owner.

The Open House Weekends are organized by the firm Jacques Beaulieu Consultant, in collaboration with GE Appliances, duProprio, Le Journal de Montréal and 24 Heures. The 2016 edition of the Open House Weekends: a celebration of Québec design – Saturdays and Sundays April 2, 3, 9 and 10, from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information call 514 255-4066, ext. 222 or visit
