It celebrates its first anniversary on August 1st, 2017 as a place of retreat (even though it’s been around a little over 375 years since the Augustinian Sisters first arrived in Quebec City on August 1, 1639).
Location Location Location: Nestled within Old Quebec’s fortified walls, this not-for-profit organization has been quite successful so far. It’s a unique concept, mixing culture and holistic health, and it has become quite THE place to go to for local and international tourists (and in such a short period).
Celebration: The excitement surrounding this anniversary is made even obvious by the fact that the Monastère was recently recognized by National Geographic Traveler as the “number one travel experience for those looking for a mental and physical reboot.” WOW, what an accomplishment in a short period!! In regards to tourism, health and well-being travel is currently a huge trend. “We are so proud and honored to have been recognized by the prestigious magazine, especially,” explained Isabelle Duchesneau, executive director of Le Monastère des Augustines. “It serves as a confirmation that our corporate decisions and our efforts have paid off, and it strengthens our position as a leader in holistic health tourism worldwide. We are off to such a great start!” Having experienced it myself firsthand, I TOTALLY attest to this claim. Been there, done that... soon to be on the list of the Healing Hotels of the World network.
Who Are They: Le Monastère des Augustines occupies the ancient wings of the former Hôtel-Dieu de Québec monastery (1639). It was North America’s first hospital north of Mexico, situated in the heart of Old Quebec City. Of course, it has been completely gutted, restored and renovated, and offers a unique experience along with several ways to connect with the Augustinian heritage in a secular environment: experiential accommodation, a museum, archive centre, a program of activities... BASICALLY it has it all!!
A MUST for a reboot, whether it be mental or physical...
