Pirates drop a pair in weekend play

Pirate Arno Martin takes a rip at a Viktor Bergeron offering.

The 440 Laval Chevrolet Pirates were sunk twice last weekend as the Pirates dropped an 8-2 decision to the Repentigny Royals on Friday night at home then were the victims of an 11-5 loss to the St. Eustache Bisons on the road Saturday evening. That pair of setbacks has the Pirates at two games above .500 with a 7-5 record. In the Friday night loss starting pitcher Samuel Poliquin got roughed up for five runs in the second inning and was tagged with the loss after allowing six hits and six runs but there were five Laval errors. The Royals’ Viktor Bergeron handcuffed the Pirates through his four innings of work as he picked-up the victory, allowing a single run on four hits and four free passes. Laval’s Jacob Dugal had a solid night at the plate going 2-for-3 and collecting one of the two Pirate RBI’s. In Saturday’s match-up in St. Eustache Laval held a 5-4 edge over the Bisons following their at-bats in the top of the fifth but the home side erupted for five runs in their half of the fifth to take a 9-5 lead. St. Eustache followed up with two more runs in the sixth to close out the scoring. The Pirates left potential runs on the bases as they abandoned 10 men on base in the loss. Second baseman Jacob Carroll made his presence felt as he scored three of the five runs chipped in one RBI and had a pair of stolen bases. Hector Sierralta was tagged with the loss while Zachary Lalonde logged the win for the Bisons. Laval will remain on the road this week, looking to get back in the win column and make-up some ground on their La Cage Sportive Brasserie Division counterparts. That mission began last night as third place Laval travelled to Repentigny to face the second place Royals. Tonight the Pirates will be in Ahuntsic’s Gary Carter Stadium taking on the 9-1 first place Montreal Orioles. Both the Royals and Orioles are riding modest three-game win streaks.
