The Suburban’s editor-in-chief Beryl Wajsman was the keynote speaker (please see page A19) Sunday at the very well attended Montreal Workers Circle annual commemoration of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto uprising, when the ghetto’s Jewish population fought back and held off Nazi forces for a month. Mount Royal MP Anthony Housefather, Côte St. Luc Mayor Mitchell Brownstein and Elisabeth Prass representing D’Arcy McGee MNA David Birnbaum were also on hand at the Gelber Centre, and survivors lit candles. Wajsman told the gathering that while Western society believes in achieving consensus by “balancing competing issues, our role is not to balance interests — our role is to challenge interests when they are evil. That’s what the fighters in the Warsaw Ghetto died for. Our young people don’t know that, because they haven’t been taught that.”
