The classic comic opera La Fille du Régiment comes to Cinema Colossus Theatre on Sunday, thanks to a series of live performances from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
Gaetano Donizetti’s two act romp stars South African soprano Pretty Yende stars as Marie, the young canteen girl of the local regiment and Mexican tenor Javier Camarena as the boy she falls in love with.
The opera is a feast of vocal fireworks and features the famous show-stopping aria “Ah! mes amis, quel jour de fête!”, which requires of Camarena no fewer than nine High Cs, along with memorable characters such as the Marquise of Berkenfield and Sergeant Sulpice.
The opera, first performed 179 years ago this month in Paris, runs slightly more than three hours and is in French with English titles.
Two-time Golden Globe–winning actress Kathleen Turner will join the cast in the non-singing role of the Duchess of Krakenthorp.
