Alex and Howie Mandel

Alex and Howie Mandel

Renowned comedian and TV star Howie Mandel will return to Montreal, this time accompanied by his YouTube star son Alex Mandel, for a special fundraising event entitled “Family Matters” to benefit AMI-Québec on Thursday, October 20 (7:30 pm) at Centre Mont-Royal. The father-son team will explain -in their own inimitable styles — what it’s like to deal with mental illness as a family.

While Howie’s struggles with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder are well-documented, Alex struggled with a severe case of ADHD as a youngster. It was acting that turned his life around. I’ve checked out some of his vlogs, which get as many as six million views. He is pretty off the wall. CJAD afternoon drive host Aaron Rand will host. Canadian Vlogger and author Matthew Santoro, whose widely-popular YouTube channel has over 5.5 million subscribers worldwide, will make a special appearance. Tickets range from $25 to $300, with different benefits. Info: amiquebec.org/familymatters or 514-486-1448.

THE MASECTOMY TATTOO: You may recognize the name Karen Malkin-Lazarovitz. Six years ago she underwent a preventative double mastectomy, after doctors told her she had a BRCA genetic mutation, which could lead to cancer. In the summer of 2015 she made headlines when instead of reconstructing her nipples, she put a beautiful piece of art there.

“I wanted to replace the scars with something I’m proud to look at,” sai the 42 year old wife, mom and passionate coordinator of special projects for CancerFightClub of Hope & Cope. She gave up her career in the information technology field to devote all of her energy to get the message out to as many men and women about genetic mutations (BRCA1 and 2) and their related hereditary cancers. After getting her famous tattoos from Meghan Goeb of Slick Styled Steel, Karen bared all for Facebook and the media. Her story was told across the globe.

Karen wants others to have the same opportunity as her. She recently reached out to P.ink , an organization that offers free mastectomy tattoos to breast cancer survivors and women who are BRCA positive. It started three years ago in Boulder Colorado and has been slowly growing. P.ink has a data base of over 1,000 women who have reached out to them with the hopes of receiving a free mastectomy tattoo. They will match up a survivor or previvor with Goeb on Wed. Oct. 12 and Thursday, October 13 at Slick Eyed Steel, Mile End Tatoo (56 Villeneuve est).Info: http://p-ink.org,
