Ringette Canada announces U19 World Ringette Championship teams

Ringette Canada announced the teams that will compete in the upcoming 2012 U19 World Ringette Championship, to be held in London, Ontario from December 28, 2012 to January 3, 2013. In addition to Canada’s two national teams - Team Canada East and Team Canada West, and Finland’s national team, three additional teams will participate – Team Russia, Team France and Team USA.
The U19 World Ringette Championship is an International Ringette Federation event. Finland White currently holds the world title after defeating Canada East at the inaugural U19 World Ringette Championship held in Prague, Czech Republic in 2009.
Four teams participated in the 2009 event - Finland White, Finland Blue, Canada East and Canada West. For the 2012 event, Ringette Canada has added three teams to those listed above - Team Russia, Team France and Team USA. These countries are currently developing their ringette programs and are not yet able to support teams at the elite level so this is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate their initiatives. Team Russia is comprised of mostly Ontario players, Team France has primarily Quebec players and Team USA athletes are mostly from Western Canada.

These teams will be attending a training camp from October 5th to 8th. Team USA will gather in Edmonton, while Team France and Team Russia will be gathering in Montreal.

In addition to the coaching staff listed above, the teams will also benefit from the expertise of Jennifer Hartley (Balzac, AB), Colleen Hagan (Manotick, ON), Phyllis Sadoway (Smoky Lake, AB), Dave Freeze (Kamloops, BC), and Anna Bjorklof (Finland). Hartley and Hagan will serve as program consultants and will work with the teams to develop fitness plans, set camp itineraries and ensure consistency across the entire program. Hartley will work with teams in the West, while Hagan will work with teams in the East. Sadoway will act as a mentor coach to the bench staff of all three teams and will ensure that all components of the training and competition are appropriate for the age/skill level of the athletes and she will provide guidance to all team bench staff. Freeze will serve as the mental trainer and Bjorklof will be the goalkeeper coach.
