A sweet repeat for Senior Lynx

By Mark Lidbetter, August 15th, 2012

In team minor sports repeating as a champion at the Provincial and National levels is a most difficult task. Well the NDG Senior Lynx accomplished that most difficult task in fine fashion to earn a second trip to Bangor Maine and a slot in the Senior Little League World Series.
“Just think about how many kids -or how few in Canada get to represent their country at a Little League World Series each year,” Lynx coach Bobby Titleman said.
“So for us to be here two consecutive years is not something that we take for granted.  And for the nine second year boys who participated last year, this is like the 'cherry on top of the sundae' for them.”
The Lynx captured their second consecutive Canadian crown in style, rolling out an undefeated string at the Nationals held in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Solid play and NDG's signature small ball play delivered key victories in the early stages of the round robin schedule.
NDG opened with a pair of one- run gems dropping the Atlantic reps 7-6 to open their title defence and held off a squad from the Prairies for a 2-1 victory.
The host Saskatchewan team fell 5-2 to the Lynx followed by British Columbia coming up on the short end of a 7-5 score. Ontario was blown away 13-1 to close out the round robin slate.
In the semi-final Saskatchewan could not keep pace with the Lynx falling 11-3 and in the final the Prairies came out flat as NDG claimed their repeat champion status with a 10-1 victory.
There was little time for celebrating as it was back home, reload the luggage and head off to Bangor.
Upon arrival, “we took the boys to Mansfield Stadium to see the 'Field of Dreams' and for 'Team Canada' uniform pick-up.  Needless to say, the boys were smiling from ear-to-ear,” coach Titleman said. “I was just trying to find a "lucky loonie" that I could bury underneath home plate.”
NDG is currently 0-2 at the World Series following losses to the host Hampden/Newburgh squad from Maine and the Latin America team Juvenil de Guatemala.
