The Kuper High School Juvenile boys' hockey team shut out the JRHS Tigers 7-0 Thursday at the Kirkland arena.
“We still have to come together more as a team, but the team is still playing well for the start of the season,” said Kodiaks head coach Jon Silver about his team's third game of the season. “We were a little sluggish at first.”
Both teams took to the ice in the early afternoon match-up pressing into one another's crease. Just minutes later the Kodiaks burst through opening with a goal by Jesse Feldman. Despite multiple Kodiak attempts to score, the Tigers remained steadfast only allowing a second goal by Adam Lee in the closing seconds of the opening period.
“I was like playing a different team and they [Tigers] played very well,” said Lee whose team defeated the Tigers by more than 10 points in an earlier match-up. “They still kept on playing in the game.”
The Kodiaks' dominance of the ice continued in the second period opening with Lee's second goal of the game followed minutes later by teammate Roberto Cellini who scored a short-handed goal. The Tigers remained steadfast with its goalies stopping as many of 30 shots on goal throughout the game. Tigers head coaches Kyle Vandegraaf conceded “we were out-gunned.”
“Our goalies played really well and our players did well in front of the net,” said Vandegraaf. “It's the beginning of the season and the players are still working on their positions on the ice.”
The Kodiaks charged into the third period to capped-off game with three-more points into the Kodiaks net starting with Lee's third game goal. The Tigers remained undeterred, despite the void on the scoreboard, but seemed powerless to put points on the board. According to Sliver “you have to give the Tigers credit for keeping up with us.”
“We played more as a team in the third period and this was the result,” said Silver about the win at Kirkland. “However, we still have a lot to work on and there are tougher teams out there that we haven't played yet.”
