The LCC Lions Bantam girls' soccer team the shutout the LCCHS Wolves 2-0 Thursday at Riverside Park.
“I felt we started the game well and played even stronger in the second half,” said Lions head coach Bridget Perry-Gore. “We knew that it was going to be a tough game and we're not used to playing on turf.”
Both teams struggled to find their footing on the soccer pitch that remained scoreless for most of the opening half. The stalemate was only broken in the closing three minutes of the game with a Lions goal scored from a free kick by Emma Margles. According to Margles “they were a good opponent and passed the ball very well.”
“They [Wolves] had the wind to their backs, but we were able to keep up and caught up with them,” said Margles about the opening half of the game. “We were less stressed in the second half with the lead.”
The Lions roared into the second half opening with a goal from a corner kick by Mikaela Ludwick extending the Lions lead 2-0. Both teams went into overdrive for the balance of the game with the defence on both sides stifling any dominance by either team. According to LaSalle Wolves head coach Marie Josee Gibeau “our defence really kept us in the game, but we couldn't capitalize.”
Despite the Lions' lead, both teams continued into the closing minutes of the half with a continued a flurry of shots on goal. However, the Lions remained steadfast defending their lead ending the game 2-0. Perry-Gore conceded “we had a slow beginning in the game.”
“After our goalie [Madison Lano] made that save in the second the half it gave the team that extra spark,” said Perry-Gore about the Lions' second half.
“This is a good win and it goes towards the playoffs.”
