Warriors win over RMHS

By Andrew Soong, October 17th, 2012

The LHS Juvenile boys Warriors soccer team downed the RMHS Raiders 2-1 at Ed Meagher field Friday in Montreal.
“We had a great second half,” said Warriors head coach Mike Elie whose team is presently undefeated. “We came out knowing we could and would win if we worked hard and played hard.”
The Raiders took control of the field in the opening five minutes of the early afternoon match and opened scoring in with a goal from a corner kick from Francis Payette. Despite the cold on the field that was accompanied with the occasional snow flake, both teams pressed-on until the end of the half with the visiting team clenching a 1-0 lead. According to Raiders head coach Philip Panet-Raymond “we were pretty strong at the beginning.”
The tone of the game changed in the second half with the Warriors' Alex Banks scoring his team's first goal of the game in the opening three minutes. Banks' opening goal seemed to rally the Warriors as the visiting team began to flounder. Panet-Raymond conceded that “the cold was a factor.”
“We weren't aggressive enough in the second half of the game and just didn't pick it up enough to win,” said Panet-Raymond about her team's second half performance. “We also played against a very solid team.”
Both teams were deadlocked in a tie for the balance of the game. Despite the Warriors renewed push, the Raiders were able to foil multiple incursions into their crease. It was only in the final five minutes of the game that the Warriors' Blake broke through to put one more point in the Raiders' net despite their deficit of one player who received a red card.
“It was a really physical game today and we were kind of depressed in the first half,” said Banks who scored both Warriors' goals of the match-up. “In the second half we came back after our coach gave us a speech, but I think the first goal was still fairly luck.”
