By Mike Cohen, October 10th, 2012

Former Lester B. Pearson School Board Chairman Marcus Tabachnick has accepted a new leadership position as the president of the  Montreal Metro West Chapter of  CARP, a national organization headed by media magnate Moses Znaimer which lobbies for seniors in Canada.
Tabachnick, a Dollard des Ormeaux resident notes that the local CARP  chapter includes all parts of the island of Montreal west of Decarie. That  includes much of the West End and all of the West Island. “CARP has more than 350,000 members across Canada, but our one-year old chapter has less than 200 members,” Tabachnick explains.
Initially Tabachnick says he is is trying to reach the over 50 crowd to let them know the advantages and strength in being part of an organization that represents this important demographic. “My job is to try to take the local chapter to the next level,” he says. “That is to increase membership, sign new sponsors and partners, increase local benefits for members, and to be principal spokesperson for CARP in our region. We will have four  or five events over the coming year.  CARP provides many services and membership entitles individuals and families to discounts at a wide variety of places nationally and internationally as it is associated with AARP in the States.”

BLOG POSTINGS:   What would have happened if  then Federal Liberal leader Stéphane Dionhad given the  Outremont nomination to Justin Trudeau instead of Jocelyn Coulon in the 2007 by-election, which present-day NDP leader Thomas Mulcair won. See my Suburban blog.....Ken Tremblay of Healthcare Quarterly (www.longwoods.com) has a fabulous interview with David Levine, the now former director general of the Montreal Health Authority. Levine, an anglophone Jewish sovereignist, was asked what he will do next. “I don't know whether I want to go back to running another large organization,” he responded. “I had my first CEO position when I was 26 years old, so I've been doing this for 37 years. I love it. I think I can get my message across through teaching, meetings, working with various groups across the country – that might well be the next step. I still feel raring to go for the next couple of years.” Don’t be surprised if PQ Premier Pauline Marois comes knocking on his door. See my blog for the entire interview…Please see the next Suburban Magazine, online late Friday afternoon, for an expanded version of this column.
