St. Laurent had $4.47 million surplus in 2011

By Joel Goldenberg, September 12th, 2012

St. Laurent council tabled the annual mayor's report on the borough's financial situation for the previous year - in this case, 2011.
The report revealed that St. Laurent experienced a local surplus of $4.47 million in 2011. For revenues, the original budget called for the borough to receive $69,152,000, but it actually received more than $71 million. The original budget for expenses was $69,152,000, but the actual amount spent was $69,368,200, leading to revenue exceeding expenses by $1,666,800.
However, sales of assets brought in $1.3 million, a subsidy for the library amounted to $239,600, various salary adjustments added up to $223,000 and savings from not having to pay Foster Wheeler in a past court case over a cancelled incinerator accounted for more than $2.4 million.
Other achievements of that year included the start of construction of the new library on Thimens, the adoption of the 2011-15 sustainable development plan with cultural elements, a 26.8 percent increase in the value of building permits, satellite dish regulations, and the investment of $22.6 million in infrastructure work, among many other initiatives.
“The achievements of our administration and our sound financial management demonstrate once more our concern to provide St. Laurent residents with excellent services and preserve the quality of our environment.” Mayor Alan DeSousa said. “To do this, we work on all fronts, in the four spheres of sustainable development, the environment, economy, social issues and culture, and to actively support initiatives from socio-community organizations and the business community.”
