Canada and Iran

September 12th, 2012

There has been much speculation about the reasons for Canada's cutting diplomatic ties with Iran. Is Canada acting as a proxy for the United States? Does Canada know something about an impending conflict? Has Canada gotten just totally fed up with Iranian agents operating out of the fortress-like Iranian compound in Ottawa and recruiting — and blackmailing — hundreds of Iranian-Canadians?
Well here's a thought. Perhaps it really doesn't matter why. Readers should know that the  Canadian decision was not done in a vacuum. In council rooms apart, word had gotten out that cutting diplomatic ties was a possibility.
The one thing that Canada achieved with this action was to send a message of moral courage that we as Canadians have had enough with the tyrannical Tehran tinpot dictator and his gang of mullahs. Prime Minister Harper has sent a message that we, as Canadians, will have no truck with dictators who threaten to destroy our allies and hold the possibility of nuclear destruction as a Sword of Damocles over the world. Oh if only others had sent the same signals to other rogue states at times of crisis. Perhaps hundreds of thousands — maybe millions — of victims would have been saved. That Canada finally did act is to the Prime Minister's credit. All the analyses of why will not cloud one over-riding message ...there was one nation that stood up and said ENOUGH!
This act of moral courage will resonate through the western democracies. That one nation, one leader, stood up and said enough! Enough to moral relativism. Enough to explaining away threats as merely posturing. Enough to the civilized world bending over backwards to enforce sanctions that don't work. Enough to democratic impotence.
