Martlets sweep Old Four soccer tourney, Redmen win consolation match

September 7th, 2012

The McGill University women's soccer team and U. of Toronto men claimed the 2012 Old Four titles as the two-day preseason tournament wrapped up at Varsity Centre on the U of T campus.
The Martlets took the women's crown in dramatic fashion. Tied 1-1 with only minutes remaining, McGill's Laura Bland-Lasso was taken down in the 18-yard box, setting up a Julia Bahen penalty shot for the game-winner. McGill's Stephanie Avery opened the scoring in the 40th minute, with Western's Hayley Slavin notching the equalizer just three minutes later.
On the men's side, McGill edged Queen's 2-1 to claim the bronze medal match. McGill's Marc Palaci-Olgun notched the first goal of the game in the 13th minute, with team captain Jeremy Hurdle adding the second marker in the 69th minute. Gaels striker Eric Koskins scored Queen's first goal of the tournament in the 88th minute.
In the men's gold medal match, the Blues took the game to penalty kicks for the second consecutive day and came out on top. Toronto's Mario Kovacevic and Western's Dominic Bell exchanged goals early in the second half with regulation ending in a 1-1 draw. A missed penalty kick by Western's Pat Mroczek would give U of T the 5-4 advantage and 2-1 win.
Queen's earned the women's bronze with a 2-0 shutout over the host Blues. Jackie Tessier, the 2012 OUA East player of the year, opened the scoring in the 32nd minute and sophomore midfielder Cara Ott added an insurance goal in the 60th. Rookie goalkeeper Madison Tyrell earned the shut out in net.
