While there was very little chance that she would be defeated in yesterday’s election, NDG’s Kathleen Weil never took the evening’s result for granted.
“Kathleen never quit until early this evening,” said Louise Sansregret, who is better known as Weil’s super-efficient executive assistant. “We were confident but we never took anything for granted.”
While she could appreciate her massive (10 000 plus votes) majority, several of her friends and supporters told The Suburban that Weil is already getting ready to “clean house” because she is determined to organize a local office that will continue to represent both the interests and welfare of her constituents in NDG.
“We’re going to sit down and have a serious chat with a number of local leaders,” said Sansregret. As a woman who always respects teamwork and what collective efforts can achieve for both NDG and its residents, Sansregret believes that a lot can be achieved during the time when Weil will occupy her seat among the government’s loyal opposition. “We’ve already done a lot over the past few years and we’re looking forward to doing a lot more.”
As opposed to the last election, both Sansregret and Christian Arsenault, one of Weil’s campaign managers, told The Suburban that they were more than pleased to see how many people bothered to come out for yesterday’s election as compared to previous ones where there wasn’t so much at stake. While the CAQ’s Angely Pacis put up a decent fight, more than a few observers believe her message was lost among the white noise that erupted following the PQ’s desperate attempt to rally the province’s hard-core nationalists to their banner during the final weeks of the campaign.
As the former minister will now have more time to spend in both Montreal and NDG, her version of NDG’s live and local politics may provide the PLQ (Parti Liberal du Québec) with at least some of the ideas and the principles it will need to provide the direction and the leadership Quebec will need (and possibly desire) to survive and prosper during this new century. n
